Portability and Costs
Portability
The entire system, excluding the subwoofer and deep cell
battery, can fit inside a medium-sized backpack, a Kelty Brisbane (Storm 2400)
weighing .90 Kg and having a capacity of 2400 cubic inches (6,096 cubic cm). The
full backpack weighs 15.58 Kg.
If the terrain will accommodate wheels, the subwoofer and
battery can be put on an airline carry-on luggage roller that weighs
approximately 2 Kg. (OK not anymore-they want you to take it apart and prove
it's not a bomb first, then you can roll it away).
If the terrain is rougher, the subwoofer and battery can be placed in a large
backpack duffel bag, which weighs 39.4 kg when full. Have fun in the snow!
Arrays still work with no glitches, but you will need multiple back-ups
including solar for everything including computers and SAT link-ups. Don't
forget waterproof stuff to cover everything. Gratefully every bit of the
equipment we designed or modified withstood nearly 100% humidity (for a couple
of weeks anyway), but take a tarp. You might need it so you can sleep.
Equipment costs
The Statham Radio Microphone can be purchased for about
$500. The Sony TCD-D8 costs approximately $600. The entire playback package,
including speakers and amplifiers, can be purchased for about $1,500. Prices
of portable computers vary; however, Polynesia and Seismic Too-too operate well on a PIII
or above.
